Kolkata, 25-28 Dec’19:
The double ton of Paras Dogra and the century of S.Suresh Kumar put Pondicherry in a commanding position with a huge lead of 385 runs against Mizoram in the Ranji clash, played at Videocon Ground, Kolkata.
Opting to bowl first, Pondicherry bowlers Vinay Kumar and Sagar Udeshi simply ran through the opponent’s camp and bundled Mizoram for 73 in their first innings. Veteran pacer Vinay Kumar took 3 for 25 while Sagar Udeshi returned with figures of 4 for 6 off the 7.4 overs he bowled.
Paras Dogra displays the classical art of making big score
With the fall of opener Anand Subramanian for 28 when the score was 42 for 1, the veteran batsman Paras Dogra displayed the classical art of playing a long innings to build a big total to seal the match to the only one end of winning it comfortably and possibly by an innings. After the fall of third wicket when Rohit departed for 5, Paras Dogra built the innings in the company of K.B.Arun Karthick with a fourth wicket partnership of 199 runs. After the departure of K.B.Arun Karthick for 86 when the score was 286, for the fifth wicket, Paras Dogra inspired his partner in his own style of waiting for the right ball to hit as he and S.Suresh Kumar built another big partnership of 150 runs. Paras Dogra made his ninth double ton in the Ranji Trophy when he reached 200 off 220 balls with 20 fours and two sixes and the celebration causing little distraction, he was out for 200.
After the departure of Paras Dogra, it was the turn of S.Suresh Kumar to carry on, who scored at more than run a ball to reach his century off 86 balls with 15 fours and one six and remained unbeaten on 103 when skipper Rohit declared with the score 458 for 5.
Vinay Kumar and Sagar Udeshi hold opponent for the second time
Starting their second innings with a deficit of 385 runs, Mizoram found itself in a pathetic condition with the score reading 30 for 4 at the end of second day’s play. The third day being washed out due to wet outfield, the fourth day also posing a threat of the match being drawn, the conditions improved and the match started after anxious delay. However, the delay neither posed any threat to the hopes of Pondicherry bowlers nor gave any symptom of hope to Mizoram to draw the match as Vinay Kumar and Sagar Udeshi sent the opponent packing with both of them taking three wickets each, and Rohit taking two wickets. With the figures of 3 for 24 in the second innings, Vinay Kumar took his tally to 6 wickets in the match and Sagar Udeshi returned with 3 for 34 to take his tally to 7 wickets in the match. Mizoram was bundled out for 113 and Pondicherry won the third consecutive match in Ranji Trophy by an innings and gained seven points to remain on top of the table with 21 points in three matches.
