Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20 : CAP Vs Assam (Rajiv Gandhi Stadium)
Dehradun, 17 Oct’19:
In the crucial match against Assam, once again the Pondicherry skipper Damodaren Rohit decided to chase instead of setting a target and rightly put Assam into bat first in the last league level match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, played at Rajiv Gandhi Ground, Dehradun.
With a good opening partnership of 43 runs for the first wicket, it was going good for Assam, but, after the fall of first wicket when one of the openers Swarupam Purkayastha, dismissed by Fabid Ahmed, it was a nose dive for Assam as the Pondicherry bowlers simply ran through the batting order quickly, putting the opponent in a disarray as the score card read 47 for 3 in the 12th over.
Ashith Sanganakal runs through the middle order:
After Fabid Ahmed gave the initial break through, S.S.Kumar sent back the other opener and no.3 batsman. Then it was the turn of Ashith Sanganakal, who just ran through the middle order of Assam and returned with figures of 4 for 17 off 7.1 overs with 3 maidens, while S.S.Kumar and Sagar Updeshi took two wickets each.
With the onslaught of Pondicherry bowlers, Assam could last only 36.1 overs and was 115 all out and Pondicherry had some batting in the first session and was comfortably coasting on with the score reading 44 for 2 at lunch.
After the lunch, it was just a formality for Pondicherry as they reached the target in 22 overs with the score reading 116 for 5. Paras Dogra scored 44 off 52 balls with six fours and one six.
In spite of the odd things happening in the initial stages of the tournament, like rain affecting the proceedings and after the rain the outfield not being ready so on and so forth, the gritty fight of Pondicherry has earned the team a place in the quarter finals of Vijay Hazare Trophy, which the state is playing only for the second time.
