Col C K Nayudu Trophy 2019-20 : Pondicherry Vs Odisha (DRIEMS Ground)
Cuttack, 06-09 Feb’20:
When the front line struggles, the second line takes charge is the general say; which Satish Jangir has done in the Col.C.K.Nayudu Trophy match against Odisha, played at DRIEMS Ground, Cuttack.
After being put into bat, Pondicherry was off to a comfortable start till they reached 38 for 1 when the opener Manikandan was dismissed for 5. But, this was not an ordinary fall of a wicket, which was realised when Pondicherry started losing wickets regularly, except the other opener George, who was a mute spectator at the fall of each wicket at the other end and with a very patient, unperturbed and well compiled knock, remained unbeaten on 53 off 107 balls. Odisha bowler Preet K. Singh Chohan bowled splendidly and returned with figures of 7 for 43 as Pondicherry was all out for 115 in the first innings.
Satish Jangir strikes
Odisha started their first innings in the same pattern of Pondicherry, with the loss of opener Binit Mohanty, dismissed by Pooviarasan for 2 when the score was 7 for 1. However, after a small partnership of 26 runs for the second wicket, when no.3 Sourav Gouda was dismissed for 19 by Satish Jangir when the score was 33 for 2 and from there, the noose was tightened as Satish Jangir and the wicket hungry Sidak Singh took control of the proceedings with a well co-ordinated attack from both the ends. Satish Jangir returned with figures of 5 for 31 as Sidak Singh followed with 3 for 37 and Pooviarasan with 2 for 23 as Odisha was bundled out for 111 in their first innings.
Satish Jangir wields his willow at crisis
With a name sake lead of 4 runs, the second innings of Pondicherry gave a jitter to the dressing room as the score was staring precariously at 78 for 8 and only Satis Jangir was at the middle with the tail when Santhosh Kumaran joined him. The vital partnership of 77 runs for the ninth wicket between Satish Jangir, who remained unbeaten on 53 off 60 deliveries with 4 fours and 3 sixes, and Santhosh Kumaran, 28 off 45 deliveries with 3 fours and 2 sixes, took the team to a fighting level as Pondicherry was all out for 168 in the second innings. Again Odisha bowler Preet K Singh Chohan returned with 6 for 44 to take his match tally to 13 wickets.
Pooviarasan’s early strike paves way for victory
Defending a total of 172, Pondicherry bowler Pooviarasan started with the same deadly attack as in the first innings to remove the top three batsmen early. Once the top were dismissed, Sidak Singh and Satish Jangir joined the party and struck regularly. Except the no.4 batsman Kshyamsagar Bal, who scored 59 off 71 deliveries, there was no resistance against Sidak Singh, who took 3 for 38 and Satish Jangir 3 for 13 and the chief wrecker Pooviarasan 4 for 49 to bundle Odisha for 105 and earned a much needed victory to remain in contention for elevation to elite group.
