In the opening match against Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, played at Airforce Complex Ground, New Delhi, the consistency of Paras Dogra and Thamaraikannan’s bowling subdued Hyderabad. Hyderabad won the toss and chose to field and tasted the success immediately by dismissing opener S.Karthik and the no.3 batsman Thalaivan Sargunam cheaply. But, the consistency of Paras Dogra, who scored a whirlwind knock of 89 off 48 balls. The third wicket partnership between Paras Dogra and skipper Rohit steadied the ship when the later was out for 27 in the eleventh over. However, with little aggression from the rest, Puducherry was 159 for 8 in 20 overs. Hyderabad bowlers Md Siraj and Mehdi Hasan took two wickets each.
In the chase, unlike Puducherry, Hyderabad had a good start and the opening pair took the score to 66 when the first wicket fell. With Akshath Rayudu scoring freely at one end, wickets fell quickly at the other. With a little show by Sandeep, who scored 21, Hyderabad crumbled against the bowling of Thamaraikannan, who finished with figures of 4 for 39 and Fabid Ahmed 2 for 23 Puducherry won the match by a slender margin of 3 runs and opened the account with 4 points.
